Everyone in the North American Health movement knows about the legal troubles (the Indiana case, the Figueroa case, the defamation case) dumped on Hulda Regehr Clark.
What many don’t know is that there is, and was, a plot to cause her these problems – and that there is one specific individual, a kingpin, an aging propagandist, behind it all. His name is Stephen Barrett, and he is a de-licensed MD, operating out of his basement in Allentown, PA.
Opinion by Consumer Advocate Tim Bolen
Barrett, with his minions, is now, and has been, conducting a “wild-eyed” onslaught against world health humanitarian Hulda Regehr Clark. PhD, ND, for the express purpose of stopping, or slowing, the research she has devoted her life to. Barrett and his minions know that Clark’s programs have helped thousands of people – and for that reason they want them stopped.
Barrett, and his henchmen, want Clark stopped knowing that such an action would cause the suffering and deaths of millions of people worldwide.
Besides the lawsuits, there is a LOT more. Barrett, on behalf of his unknown paymaster, unleashed a literal wall of hatred against Clark, her supporters, and those innocents, spurned by the medical system, desperately seeking help.
But Clark, her supporters, and those she’s helped, weathered Barrett’s sleazy assault, and in doing so came to some conclusions.
I’ll tell you about that assault, and the conclusions, here on these pages.
Then I’m going to ask for your help…
How it began…
Early in 1999, Barrett ordered his minions, including his personal attorney Christopher Grell, to mount an all-out, anything goes, attack against Clark.
Clark’s books had been selling well, far better than Barrett’s books.
With big promises of financial reward, Barrett had advertised on his website www.quackwatch.com for, and found, a non-English speaking foreign national female plaintiff, and her husband, that would claim that Clark had somehow damaged her at Clark’s research clinic in Mexico. Barrett arranged for his personal attorney, Christopher Grell, to file a bogus lawsuit against Clark and twenty one other defendants.
Barrett’s attack against Clark didn’t stop there.
The Evil Assault Against Clark…
Apparently, in early 1999, right around the time the first lawsuit was filed, Barrett ordered attorney Grell to file criminal charges against Clark with the Federal Bureau of Investigation in San Diego. The FBI declined to investigate (they had better things to do), but did run an NCIC check which, we all know, ended up in Clark’s arrest on seven year old charges for allegedly “Practicing medicine without a license,” which were later dropped, in Indiana. I believe that Grell had hired a private detective to hunt down Clark and provide her address to the FBI.
During the case activity, Barrett sent an emotionally disturbed man, who blames Clark for his mother’s death of cancer, to a Clark rally for the express purpose of disrupting it. The man claims that although his mother never did Clark’s program (he wouldn’t let her), that somehow Clark is still responsible for his mother’s death. Barrett, who has had Psychiatric training (although never Board Certified), was well aware that this man had said in public “I don’t know what I’d do if I ever met Clark.” Barrett sent him anyway, and did not notify police of the potential danger to Clark, and her supporters. Fortunately, Clark supporters, monitoring Barrett’s chat group [Healthfraud], intercepted the discussion, and alerted authorities. The man was ordered off the property, and Clark was kept safe.
Barrett’s heir apparent to the “quackbuster” throne is, I believe, Terry Polevoy, MD, a pimple doctor in Canada. Polevoy had been under investigation by Canadian authorities for a number of reasons. According to the Canadian press, Polevoy entered Canada as a draft dodger from the United States. Polevoy stalked Canadian Radio personality Christine McPhee for months, and other females for shorter periods of time.
Polevoy may have ceased his clandestine following of McPhee, and others, after police raided his home late one night, questioning his activities. Canadian medical authorities investigated allegations of mental instability and professional misconduct against Polevoy.
Polevoy operates a “hate” website in Canada, where he specializes in attacks against leading-edge health professionals that spurn the heavy prescribing of dangerous drugs. Polevoy conducted such a virulent attack against Clark in Canada that Clark Supporters felt it necessary to put an armed cordon around Clark when she was the guest speaker in Toronto. Toronto police were standing by to assist. Polevoy’s website was turned off by his original provider, but he has since found space for his virulence from another fringe group..
Barrett conducts an internet campaign to disrupt Clark’s activities and her support network. Barrett has set up a system whereby when someone “searches” for Clark information on the internet, they are sent to a series of websites, including his own and Polevoy’s, where virulent anti-Clark disinformation is thrust at the reader as authoritative.
The anti-Clark websites are run by a house painter in Ohio, a 22-year old veterinary student (who works with Polevoy) in Canada, an unemployed computer consultant (whose wife supports him) in Australia – not by anyone with credentials.
Barrett minions have infiltrated and disrupted the Clark discussion groups. Several of Barrett’s hate-mongers had infiltrated the DrClark list and verbally truncheoned Clark supporters and those interested in information on Clark’s programs. They were evicted.
Barrett threatens lawsuits against anyone who tells Clark supporters the truth about Barrett’s activities. Barrett is making false statements, and providing misinformation, to internet service providers in attempts to damage the Clark network.
Barrett – Grell, The Unholy Alliance…
San Francisco bay area lawyer Christopher Grell is Stephen Barrett’s personal attorney, and has represented him, AND LOST, in at least two cases we know of. Grell has a record of absurdly filed lawsuits, which he spends a lot of time on. He causes the opposition to spend a lot of time (and money) on these cases, and then he loses – and then loses on appeal.
I have reason to believe that Christopher Grell is a legal “stalker-for-hire.” I believe that Stephen Barrett, directly, or once-removed, is a “wild-eyed” vexatious litigant, and is the “real litigant” behind Figuero vs. Clark.
I have reason to believe, Barrett, and hence Grell, are working directly for, and indirectly for, and are being paid directly, and indirectly, by, the sleaziest of the drug lords.
Barrett Has Threatened To Sue Me…
Stephen Barrett has threatened to sue me several times over my opinions about his activities, but has failed to do so. I believe he knows that I would use the opportunity to seize his records with a court order, and I’d be in his basement lair with my research team, and their microscopes, before he could bellow “Heil Hitler” four times in a row.
Stephen Barrett is scared to death of me – and he should be – for if I get access to his records, I’ll turn over everything I find INTERESTING to a Federal Grand Jury investigation, and write a book about it…
The Public Needs To Know…
The public needs to know “Who exactly is paying Christopher Grell’s legal fees?” In the Clark case alone (two years of litigation against 22 defendants), IT LOOKS TO ME like Grell was able to amass billing hours somewhere between $700,000 to 1.2 million dollars. As far as I know the Figueroas don’t have this kind of money, and I doubt that Stephen Barrett is sending him personal checks. So where is the money coming from?
Specifically, who, EXACTLY, is PAYING Grell to harass Clark?
We intend to find out…
Barrett makes claim to be an “expert in quackery.” He, and his minions, have named Hulda Clark as a “quack.” Barrett’s “lack of expertise” was exposed last year in a court case in New Jersey, when it was discovered, in the courtroom, that Barrett misrepresents his credentials, claiming he is “a retired Psychiatrist.” Barrett was forced to admit, under oath, that he, in fact, had never been Board Certified, in any State, or anywhere in the world, as a Psychiatrist.
Barrett’s publicized Curriculum Vitae seems to indicate that he, for whatever reason, was unable to hold a job for any length of time, over the ENTIRE LENGTH of his career.
The government of New Zealand, in a scathing report, OFFICIALLY declared the writings of Stephen Barrett as “propaganda, and of no evidentiary value.”
The Leader Of Clark’s Legal Team…
Carlos F. Negrete is a well known California based Civil attorney who takes on, and WINS, high profile cases. Among his many experiences, he has successfully fought HMOs for their refusal to treat patients. He is a known advocate of patients’ rights.
Negrete is battering Barrett, and Barrett’s half-vast lawsuits, in the court system.
After analyzing the Figueroa vs. Clark case Negrete said “This is a very suspicious case. It looks to me that there is a hidden agenda here, that has nothing to do with the original filing of the case. For good cause, we are demanding that Plaintiff’s attorney immediately produce evidence backing their doubtful claims – and produce the Plaintiffs for deposition, which we will video tape. Up to now, although the Plaintiff’s attorney has made grandiose claims, he has failed to come forward with any meaningful evidence. Shockingly, the Plaintiff’s attorney has failed to produce one single piece of medical documentation to support ANY of his client’s dubious claims. More importantly, the Plaintiffs have not “legally verified” any of the answers to our questions. And, attorney Grell is refusing to produce the Plaintiffs for deposition. I’m beginning to wonder if there really is a Plaintiff, at all, or whether Grell has made them up out of whole cloth.”
Negrete also says “Dr. Clark will not be intimidated into stopping the research that she has devoted her life to, for the benefit of millions of people. We intend to vigorously fight these specious, unsupported, and irresponsible claims. Dr. Clark does not intend to cower away from mean spirited attacks on her reputation. We strongly believe that Dr. Clark will ultimately prevail in the lawsuit and be vindicated.”
Barrett isn’t going to like Negrete, one bit…
The Facts of the Figueroa vs. Clark Case…
Christopher Grell sued twenty-two defendants in the Figueroa vs. Clark case. In almost two years he has made no effort to subpoena half of those. Some of those named in the suit as co-defendants with Dr. Clark, the Clark team has never heard of, and it is not explained in the suit what their relationship might be. One of the defendants named does not exist at all, and never has. Another defendant wasn’t even around during the time of the supposed incident.
It is not known whether Barrett’s lawyer, Christopher Grell, did shoddy preparation for the Figueroa lawsuit, or whether his actions were intentional. There are facts about Grell and Barrett which point in either, and both, directions. Shoddy preparation and inadequate legal activities can be a tactic to exhaust the opposition’s legal funds.
Grell could not, or would not, produce the so-called Plaintiffs, Esther and Jose Figueroa. The Plaintiffs don’t appear to have any part in the case. And it looks like they are not, themselves, answering the court-ordered legal “interrogatories” and demands for information. It may be that Grell/Barrett are keeping the Figueroas themselves in the dark, for their own reasons, or to further their own agenda.
Meanwhile, Stephen Barrett’s minions announced the so-called Figueroa “complaints” in the case, all over the internet as though they were true.
Barrett’s Plan Backfired…
It is always a good idea to have a really GOOD attorney on your team. Clark does – Barrett doesn’t…
The Figueroa vs. Clark case, took on ominous highlights for Barrett and Grell, after famed California civil litigator Carlos F. Negrete, took over for Clark.. Negrete instantly mounted an aggressive campaign, demanding IMMEDIATE presentation of evidence from Grell’s office, backing their dubious claims against Clark.
Grell, attorney-wise, sort of a stumbling bumbler, was stunned by Negrete’s assault – and could not provide any evidence. His answers to Negrete’s court ordered questions were just an angry reiteration of the original poorly written lawsuit – all harangue, and feather-light on facts.
Grell, even before Negrete’s arrival, was fumbling through the case. The last time I looked at the court docket, there had been eighteen (18) OSC/Sanction hearings scheduled by the Judge against Grell. An OSC/Sanction (Order to Show Cause – with attorney sanctions) hearing can carry severe penalties for errant attorneys. Apparently, Grell just simply wasn’t doing what he was supposed to do in a timely manner. The Judge, HIMSELF, forced Grell to drop FIVE defendants that weren’t within the court’s jurisdiction. Grell had also filed “proof of service” forms against FOUR MORE named defendants claiming that they “were served” at a private mail box company, although the owner of the mailbox business gave Grell a letter detailing the fact that “he had never heard of these people, none of them were renting a mail box from him, nor had they ever rented a mail box from him.”
It became obvious that there was, for all practical purposes, NO EVIDENCE. It was also obvious that attorney Grell had little, or no, substantive relationship with the alleged plaintiffs, Esther and Jose Figueroa.
Let’s see – no plaintiff, no evidence, no defendants – hmmm? A hard case to win (sarcasm intended)…
Grell Sweats…
Next Negrete demanded his right to “depose” the Figueroas (physically interview them). That’s when the case began to fall apart. Grell would not, or could not, produce the Figueroas for a physical interview. Negrete went directly to the Judge who then ORDERED Grell to produce his plaintiffs for deposition by January 22, 2001.
Grell failed to produce the Figueroas. Failure to follow the DIRECT ORDERS of a Judge can have serious consequences for an attorney.
Negrete turned up the heat again demanding that a sort of bond be put up to cover Clark’s legal costs, in this obviously frivolous attack. The Judge has agreed, issuing orders to that effect.
Want to read more about Barrett and the “quackbuster” conspiracy to deprive Americans of first rate health care? There are several really good books.“Racketeering In Medicine” by author James Carter MD, DrPh, is an excellent primer.
Then there’s a new book “Politics in Healing – The Suppression and Manipulation of American Medicine” by ex-congressman Dan Haley from New York State. Then there is the ever authoritative “Assault On Medical Freedom,” by P. J. Lisa. The list goes on, and on… You can get MUCH MORE information by taking s look at our website section “Who, and What is the Health Freedom Movement.” |
Barrett’s Dirty Fingerprints…
Barrett, and his minions, bandied the Figueroa case all over the Internet, using the original unproven accusations to defame Clark’s books, her followers, and her work.
I suspect that Grell was representing Barrett’s interest in the case, not the Figueroa’s. I suspect the Figueroas figured out they were being used, and were reluctant to continue the charade. Especially since the substituted much-lauded “conventional” cancer therapy wasn’t, and isn’t, working…
I also suspect that the Figueroas were horribly misled by Barrett, and perhaps other self-styled quackbusters, into believing that Clark’s theories were “fraud and quackery” and of no benefit.
Clark, the Figueroa’s, and the American People, are the Victims Here…
Although introduced to Clark’s work by members of her Church, Mrs. Figueroa discontinued the Clark protocol early in it’s inception, in favor of traditional treatment. The cancer has, of course, now spread to the rest of her body. This poor woman is not now expected to live. She has five children. I wonder if even Clark could save her at this point.
Barrett and Grell convinced the Figueroas to also SUE THEIR OWN CHURCH – for having given the Figueroas a copy of Clark’s book. Until the case is over Esther and Jose can’t even talk to their own Church, and get the solace they need, when they need it most.
Say a prayer for Esther Figueroa, and her family…
Then Grell Ran For the door...
Fumbling, bumbling, stumbling (and mumbling?) Christopher Grell filed a “Attorney’s Motion to Withdraw” and a hearing was set for April 27, 2001 – but the judge DENIED his motion – because Grell filed the Motion on the wrong form… Grell had to do it all over again.
Apparently, the Figueroas, fed up with Grell and Barrett’s handling of the case, FIRED Grell before Grell could refile his withdrawal. The Figueroas decided to represent themselves.
But, it Wasn’t Over…
Barrett, and his minions, knew that there were problems with the Figueroas as Plaintiff’s long before we did. We had some indications that something was wrong with the case when Robert S. Baratz, MD, DDS, an apparently UNEMPLOYED top lieutenant of Barrett’s, and a competitor to Canadian Polevoy as the heir-apparent to the quackbuster throne, began to manage certain aspects of the assault against Clark, for Barrett.
Baratz organized an internet attack against Clark’s supporters. He, himself, invaded the DrClark discussion group. Baratz, organized Barrett’s minions to try to find ANOTHER Plaintiff against Clark.
Despite their assault – they came away empty.
Enter – the Defamation Case…
Stephen Barrett can’t stand being mocked and ridiculed. He doesn’t like being exposed for what he is. He needs to operate his sleazy business without any attention being focused on him. He wants everyone to focus on the person he has selected for destruction.
In his assault on Clark – that wasn’t happening. He was getting notoriety. His activities, for the first time in one of his attacks, were under a constant spotlight. And, that spotlight wasn’t showing him up as something good. He wasn’t used to that. His own tactics were being used against him – and people were laughing at him.
Bullies can’t afford to be laughed at.
But worse, for Barrett, was the fact that the spotlight was making his potential victims not afraid of him, and his organization. More, and more people began to speak up against him.
Barrett, in a rage, sued Clark, myself, and a few others
(sort of), claiming we defamed him. He didn’t deny he was behind the vicious assault on Clark. He just didn’t like us talking about his qualifications to judge others.
Barrett can dish it out, but he can’t take his own medicine…
Barrett didn’t really sue us . He just tells his followers he did it – and he put the fake lawsuit on his internet website.
Most of the legal “services,” in the so-called defamation case, were ruled, by the judge, to be “improper,” and not considered good enough to allow the case to continue. I think they did these “bad services” intentionally.
Why would Barrett do that? Two reasons: (1) Because he is a crackpot. (2) Because he is afraid. Not a “little bit” afraid – but “a lot” afraid.
He’s afraid of us having the case actually move forward, which would give us the right to demand his records. For, if I get them, I’ll uncover his paymasters – and we’ll have the “deep pockets” we’ve been looking for. Barrett wants to cause Hulda Clark trouble – not have Hulda Clark, or me, cause HIM trouble…
Reopening Clark’s Clinic…..
The Mexican authorities closed down Clark’s clinic based on false and misleading information provided to them from sources outside Mexico. Clark’s strategy team is asking the Mexican government to officially investigate the source of those false claims. We are also asking them to provide us with the evidence we need to pursue the perpetrators in Civil Court.
We think that, originally, the Mexican government acted in good faith, believing the charges against Clark came from reputable sources. Upon investigation of the charges – no substance was found to the allegations. We have suggested that a formal complaint should be filed through official Diplomatic channels, with a request for cooperation by the authorities of the nation(s) from which the perpetration originated.
I had to stay quiet about this for good reason: It appeared that the perpetrators were “continuously” providing false information to the Mexican government about Clark, and that certain members of the government were being duped.
We felt it was important to let the Mexican government discover for themselves the perfidy of the informants – for we know that if we don’t stop the assault RIGHT NOW it will keep coming, and we’ll have to deal with it continuously. The perpetrators actions, of themselves, provide clear and compelling evidence of a horrifying conspiracy.
I’m not going to detail the “false information assault against Clark in Mexico” at this time. Those of you who have been following the continuous assault against Hulda Clark in the United States, and Canada, can draw your own conclusions. We will reveal details at another time.
I will let you know soon, about reopening the clinic.
We Hid Hulda Clark Away…
I am not so worried about the clinic closure as I am about Dr. Clark’s personal safety, and security. I have met some of the people determined to stop Clark’s research. Frankly, I believe they are not far from violence. I have personally met three individuals involved in the conspiracy to shut down Clark’s vital research. Each and every one, in my opinion, has a cult mentality. Carlos Negrete, Clark’s lead attorney, has recently had to step in and threaten one of them with a restraining order.
Those trying to stop Clark are getting more and more frustrated – for Clark’s popularity increases with every turn, and every crisis. People feel her message is timely, and correct.
We monitor the internet traffic of those tying to damage Clark. Although, it is obvious that not all of those supposedly opposed to Dr. Clark’s efforts, are as loyal to their agenda as the cult leaders would like to believe, overall, I am worried that, as a group, they are getting more, and more, shrill – more desperate sounding. We have a copy of an e-mail where one of the cult followers wants to start a fund to “have Tim Bolen abducted and probed.” In an Internet discussion group they speak of “lynching” alternative health practitioners. Certain elements keep up a constant barrage of terrorist-like threats against health freedom fighters. And, a lot more.
The “Organized Mob Raid” of the Clark Clinic…
The so-called “closure” of the Clark clinic wasn’t just Health Department employees showing up for an inspection. It was an “Organized Mob Raid.” Video evidence shows there could have been close to twenty people involved in the incident – and a much larger crowd gathering. We are still investigating, and gathering information. We do know that the mob, under false color of authority, tried to physically force it’s way into the clinic. I believe that if the heavily-armed Mexican Federales hadn’t shown up in the nick of time, “the raid” would have had a much different, and horrifying, ending.
Clark Team members were on the phone continuously with Clark clinic employees during the actual raid. It was our advice to “Not open the doors until proper authorities, properly identified, with proper papers, were present.” I believe this “organized mob raid” had a more sinister intent – and the “keeping the doors locked” strategy prevented Dr. Clark, the clinic, and her staff, from physical harm – or worse.
We have attained video footage, broadcast by the BBC – Wales which shows the organization, the planning, and the execution of the “raid” of the Clark clinic. Some of the “perpetrators” are shown encouraging the Mexican authorities, and actually engaging in the planning and execution of the raid. The footage shows the mob scene outside the clinic (which terrified those inside), attackers beating on the windows attempting entry, and (thank God) the arrival of the heavily armed Mexican Federales to control the mob, and the growing crowd.
Dr. Clark Has Used Her Time Well…
Those of you who were around in September of 1999 when Dr. Clark was arrested on bogus charges of “Practicing Medicine without a license,” and hauled back to Indiana, will remember that she used those sixteen days of incarceration productively. She worked on her laboratory manual.
This time (though not incarcerated) she is working on a number of productive things.
She has already made THREE important new discoveries…
Dr. Clark and I Disagree on an Issue...
Personally, I believe that Dr. Clark should not bother to reopen her research clinic in Mexico, I think that it is “the wrong place at the wrong time.” I think her efforts at research should be focused here in the United States. I believe it is time to mainstream her EXISTING protocols, right here, and right now.
Dr. Clark, however, wants to CONTINUE NEW RESEARCH, and she feels that Mexico is the place to do it. She wants to continue that work in Mexico because Mexican medicine is based in a tradition of herbal (natural) medicine, rather than allopathic (Western medicine).
The Problem Is…
Money.
We should, in the best of all worlds, be able to do both – continue Clark’s superb research (wherever she wants to locate) and mainstream her protocols in the United States by going through the process. Her research is finding more, and more, answers to health problems. MAINSTREAMING existing protocols would reach hundreds of thousands (if not millions) of people quicker – and that would mean less suffering, and more lives saved.
The Dilemma…
There is only so much money…
Clark, and her team have, since September of 1999, had to fight off in one legal battle after another – the most EVIL onslaught ever foisted on Americans – a blatant outright attempt to stop a cure for cancer, and other diseases from becoming mainstream.. Hundreds of thousands of dollars previously earmarked for research, mainstreaming, and formal approvals, has had to be moved to “legal defense.” There is no end in sight – and the onslaught is all coming from the same place.
Dr. Clark is a wonderful person, a great scientist, and my friend – but she is not a business person. She gives everything she has “of value” away. She has put the majority of her findings into the public domain. I, and the rest of the team close to her, love her for this attribute – but it doesn’t generate CASH when you need it – like now – when we need to do four things – (1) research, (2) mainstreaming, (3) conduct a legal defense, and (4) a legal offense, all at the same time.
The Solutions…
The Clark Team, of which I proud to be a member, is working on solutions – and we are open to suggestions. Reach me directly at Jurimed2@yahoo.com.
One of the ideas we have already decided to implement – is a new Dr. Clark website – detailing (with copies of legal documents) the intensive legal defense we are having to mount. We’ll show you the malicious tactics the opposition is using to tie up Clark’s research funds in legal defense. And we’ll show you why we need to conduct an intensive offense against the cult which is attempting to silence her…
This is the website…
